Document Builder for NACS

I created the Document Builder to automate the process of building the Directory of Colleges and College Stores for the National Association of College Stores. Previously, NACS had outsourced the creation of the directory once a year to a third party, which wasted a lot of time and money with out of the office communications and revision after revision. The new Document Builder allows NACS to create the directory at any time with the press of a button.

The Document Builder is essentially a fancy mail merge tool built with VB.net and SQL Server. It allows you to easily read hierarchical data from a database, format the data exactly as you want it, and output it in a variety of formats.

Timken Business Stationery

Timken Business Stationery is an electronic stationery system for Microsoft Word that I developed for The Timken Company. Originally written in WordBasic in 1995, I completely rewrote it in 2000 using Microsoft Visual Basic 6.0. It has had three major releases in the past eight years. The source code includes over 70,000 non-blank lines of code with full technical documentation. It includes custom stationery templates for over 60 business units around the world, including spot translations into Japanese, Chinese, Polish and other languages.

Since the system had to support stationery in a variety of layouts and languages, the system is fairly complex. A full development environment was created to allow easy creation and updating of the templates and locales.

Timken Electronic Business Card

I created the Timken Electronic Business Card add-in for Microsoft Outlook in 2004. It allows associates of The Timken Company to include signatures that look like business cards in their Outlook e-mails. It is written in Microsoft Visual Basic 6.0. It includes over 60 templates with various languages for all the units of the company around the world. It allows recipients of the e-mails to click on the address for a map to the location and to download a vCard of the sender’s contact information (thought Timken has not maintained this feature and it no longer works).

SummaCare Data Wizard

I first developed the SummaCare Data Wizard for Document Concepts back in 2006 and have updated it through eleven versions. Document Concepts prints the provider directories for the SummaCare health insurance plans. They are provided with a large data export that needs to be organized, sorted and formatted appropriatly. The process is complicated because the data is sent as a simple flat file, leading to a lot of data duplication and errors that need to be filtered out. After organizing the data, the Wizard outputs it in PageMaker/InDesign or Microsoft Word formats.

Joomla! 1.5 Website for CLAS

In February 2009 I launced the redesigned website for Community Legal Aid Services. It uses the Joolma! 1.5 content management system. The site's template was based on the included Beez template but all of the CSS and PHP code was completely rewritten.
